Team Training Days: January - May
Tuesdays and Fridays: 6-9 p.m.
For the last 30 years, youth from the local community have performed a reenactment of the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier during Memorial Day weekend. Sentinels remain on duty through the heat of the day and the loneliness of night until the closing ceremony on Memorial Day afternoon. They have never faltered through rain, shine, hail, or whatever Oklahoma weather may bring.
Each year, Sentinels have trained for five months, putting in over 150 hours to prepare for the reenactment. Training consists of an initial assessment weekend, two three-hour training sessions each week, and an additional activity on one Saturday a month. The full training schedule will be announced to selected Trainees and their parents upon selection.
The Instructor Team has carefully developed the training program to bring out the highest standard of perfection in the Trainees. This includes physical exercise, drill movements, rifle movements, marching, team building activities, leadership and character development, and knowledge of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Youth on Guard programs. Trainees are evaluated multiple times on their attitude, fitness, performance, and knowledge throughout the training season. While their training is fast-paced and physically intense, it is not impossible. Success in training requires commitment from the Trainees while they are at Youth on Guard activities and during practice at home.
