Our uniforms are intentionally different from standard military uniforms. As a Civil Air Patrol-sponsored activity, we initially wore Air Force uniforms due to CAP's affiliation as the Air Force auxiliary. Moving forward, we've prioritized maintaining a respectable, military-like appearance without implying any branch affiliation or creating a risk of misrepresenting military service. This allows us to bring honor to the Unknowns in a simple way without drawing attention to ourselves.
The uniform that was ultimately selected is dark blue. It features a traditional four-pocket service coat similar to those worn by all branches of service at some point but is not a copy of any of them. The remainder of the uniform consists of a long-sleeve white shirt, hand-tied black tie, “bus driver” service cap, hand-shined leather shoes, pistol belt to prevent the service coat from interfering with rifle movements, and white gloves. Sunglasses are worn as needed to protect the Sentinel’s vision from the sun.
Our uniforms are intentionally simple, lacking insignia and rank. This practice, inspired by the Sentinels at Arlington National Cemetery, honors the Unknowns. Just as the Unknowns' identities and military ranks remain unknown, so too do the Sentinels' ranks remain undisclosed. This ensures the Unknowns are always considered of higher rank. Uniform accessories are limited to achievements as a Sentinel, including qualification ribbons (one blue stripe for Sentinel, three for Sergeant of the Guard) and an unnumbered replica of the Tomb Guard Badge.
