Youth on Guard Sentinels carry parade rifles that are replicas of the M-14 rifles carried by the Sentinels at Arlington National Cemetery.
The Sentinels must guard the Tomb and the plaza around it against desecration and disrespect. In the event a person attempts to enter the plaza or is disrespectful, the Sentinel on duty will challenge their behavior by requesting that they remain respectful and off the plaza.
If the Sergeant of the Guard is on the plaza and notices a veteran in the audience, they drag their heel in recognition of their service.
That piece of track is what we call the box. In the event of an issue on the plaza, the Sentinel will go to the box where they will be visible to an observer in their quarters. The observer will send the Sergeant of the Guard out to determine the problem and correct it. After it is corrected the Sentinel will return to their normal march.
In all but the most extreme cases, the Sentinel will continue to walk their shift as normal. In anything more than very light rain, the Sentinel will wear a raincoat over their uniform. If circumstances require it for the safety of the Sentinel, they may guard the Tomb from the corridor between their quarters and the Tomb.
