Flag Patrol is a huge part of the weekend event. It's a way for the community to join in remembrance and to honor the over 4000 veterans whose casket flags fly at Floral Haven in the Avenue of Flags.
Families, youth groups, business teams, small groups, or just a group of friends are encouraged to spend a little time over Memorial Day weekend remembering our Fallen. Register your group for Flag Patrol below.
Each flag represents a veteran that had passed on. Each flag has a brass nameplate detailing its veteran, his/her branch, and unit. The community Flag Patrol teams patrol the cemetery grounds searching out flags in distress. When a flag requiring assistance is found, the team salutes the flag, reads aloud the dog tag, and then takes a moment of silence.Â
After honoring the veteran, the team takes the flag down, being careful not to let it touch the ground, fixes it, raises it, and then finally salutes it again and moves on, searching for the next. This is continuously performed during daylight hours and is open to families and members of the public to participate in.
Register your family, church group, business team, etc to volunteer to assist with this special duty.
